Promoting Inner Growth and Healing

Psychotherapy can be a powerful form of healing. We are an interconnected whole, with each part affecting the others. Changing beliefs, expressing feelings, releasing blocks from the body, modifying our relationships with others – each change ripples through the system, and the system grows. A lot of my work as a counselor is helping people undo the conditioning that inhibits their growth and introducing new learning that supports change.
Since what blocks us is different at different moments, what is needed changes. At various moments you may need:
- support and mirroring, to be heard (especially if you’ve felt alone)
- understanding (insight) about what keeps a certain pattern going
- objectivity to challenge outdated beliefs that are contributing to your suffering
- more awareness (mindfulness) to help you not collapse into your emotions
- to learn to regulate (manage) your feelings so they are not overwhelming
- new perspectives, problem-solving, even role-playing new responses
- support to safely express emotions that have been locked up
I use all these and more (see My Therapeutic Approach).
Areas of Practice (Issues I work with)
Like all therapists, I have some areas I do more work in, some areas I’m comfortable and competent in but don’t work in often, and some areas where I do not have the needed expertise and refer clients out. This doesn’t mean that if your concern is not on this short list, I can’t help you. It’s worth checking in with me.
My focus areas include:
- childhood abuse (sexual, emotional, physical)
- childhood neglect and under-parenting
- traumatic stress, depression, anxiety
- developing a resilient self and more positive self-image
- life transitions
- spiritual concerns and existential questions
- spiritual abuse
- grief and loss
I primarily do individual therapy and only with adults.
Trauma work
Note: There are many trauma therapists in Boulder, and my work is primarily with adults who experienced tough childhoods. Traumatic stress in childhood is called developmental trauma or complex trauma. Of course many times the source of such trauma is repressed, and we only know that things aren’t right with us.

Affordable therapy
Psychotherapy is expensive! But then so are all types of health care. Having paid out of pocket myself for therapy for years, I know it’s not easy. That’s why I work on a sliding scale with all of my clients and never top out on my fees. In my opinion, it should feel like a bit of a stretch but not strain you so much that you have to limit your care. I’m not one of those providers who feels like my value is reflected by what I charge. Yes, I need to make a living, but my value can’t be measured by money. And neither can yours. Yes, some people get sessions reimbursed by insurance and there are therapists who are preferred providers with particular companies, but there are cautions about using health insurance to pay for therapy, which I’d be happy to talk with you about. I am not a provider on any panels, but if you have out-of-network care, you may be able to get some reimbursement with a qualifying diagnosis.
Find out if I am the right therapist for you
The choice of a therapist is a very personal decision, and I recommend meeting with a therapist first to see how you experience that person. It is essential that you feel comfortable and trusting of anyone you decide to work with. To set up a free consultation, please email or call me using the contact box in the right column.
My practice is open to people of all sexual orientations, lifestyles, and cultural backgrounds.
As a licensed psychotherapist, my practice is regulated by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies.
